Spinal Cord Injuries
The spinal cord relays electrical signals throughout the body. Spinal cord injuries can occur 1) when a physically traumatic event damages cells within the spinal cord or 2) severs nerve tracts that cumulatively make up the spinal cord.
The most common types of spinal cord injuries include bruising or contusion of the spinal cord and compression of the spinal cord which is caused by pressure.
Other types of injuries include lacerations which are severing or tearing of spinal cord nerve fibers, such as damage caused by a knife or gun shot, and central cord syndrome which is specific damage to the corticospinal tracts of the cervical region of the spinal cord.
Severe spinal cord injuries often cause paralysis (loss of voluntary movement due to loss of muscle control) and loss of sensation and reflex function below the point of injury, including involuntary activity such as breathing and other activities such as bowel and bladder control.
Other symptoms such as pain or increased sensitivity to stimuli, frequent muscle spasms, and sexual dysfunction may develop immediately or over time. Spinal cord injury patients are also prone to develop secondary medical problems, such as bladder and lung infections, decubitus ulcers and bed sores.
The leading causes of spinal cord injury vary by age. Automobile, motorcycle, all terrain and other motor vehicle accident crashes are the leading cause among persons under age 65. For persons over 65, falls cause most spinal cord injuries. Other causes include:
- Bullet or stab wounds;
- Diving accidents;
- Extreme twisting of the trunk
- Surgical mistakes; medical malpractice and medical negligence;
- Severe electric shock;
- Sports especially “extreme” sports and
- Workplace accidents especially involving heavy equipment.
